Musical Renaissance: Money
I think I'm just going to turn this into a series. I keep bumping into stuff I haven't listened to in ages and rediscovering how outstanding it is. Today's entry: Money, from Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon album. To be honest, you can probably throw in the entire album - there's a lot of great stuff in there, but I think Money is the poster child for what's great.
The next time you listen to this track on the album, pay close attention to the sax solo and what follows immediately thereafter. I'm not a musician and won't pretend to have any kind of ear for the nuances of composition, but at a visceral level something special happens in the transition away from the sax solo that, to my ignorant ear, appears to be more than just a shift from mellow to hard.
Update 9 JUL 2007: So Aaron had a good idea (see comments). Even though it wasn't my own, I decided to use it. I offer you a video of Waters, Gilmour, et al. playing Money at Live 8 in 2005. Thanks, Aaron.
