Changing Your Wesabe Password

Yesterday I had to change my Wesabe password.  Somehow it got misplaced in the jumble of cryptic passwords that my brain cells usually manage to keep reasonably available.  I was trying to upload a new batch of financial data and I just couldn't seem to remember it so I just went to the site and traveled the familiar Forgot Your Password? path to reset my password.

Once my password was reset, it was time to go to work.  Except I couldn't.  I use the Wesabe Uploader tool to move data between my financial institutions and Wesabe, but when I entered my new password in the uploader...it didn't work.  Incorrect password.  Huh?

I logged into the site to verify that the password I had just reset was correct and then dug around a bit until I found something that told me that the uploader was not synced with the site.  Ah hah.  There were no instructions for resetting the password in the uploader, but the message did tell me that I should contact support.  So I did.

Wesabe's CPO, it would seem, was manning the help desk about 12:30am EDT and I had what I needed when I woke up this morning.  The instructions were simple and it would've been a lot easier if they were available without having to contact support.  As far as I can tell, there's no personal data involved or security implications, so I'm going to put them out there and maybe save someone else a little time.

If you use the Wesabe Uploader and change your Wesabe password, here's how to "reset" (read: delete) the uploader configuration file:

Mac Users

  1. Navigate to ~/Library/Application Support/Wesabe Uploader/ and delete the file named user_cfg.wsb.

Windows Users

  1. If hidden files and folders are not currently visible, you need to make them so.  Open Windows Explorer and, from the menu bar, access Tools > Folder Options > View > Hidden files and folders and select the option to Show hidden files and folders.
  2. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Wesabe Uploader\ and delete the file named user_cfg.wsb.

Now launch the uploader application and you'll have to re-enter your authentication credentials (username and password).  Unfortunately, you'll also have to add all of your accounts again as well.  That part is a pain, but don't worry, data that's already been uploaded is preserved.

Hopefully, it's in the short-term product plan to offer tighter integration between the client tool and the site, but until then hopefully these instructions will help someone else.
